Amid heightened federal immigration enforcement in Minnesota, Ashley Fairbanks spearheaded a grassroots response through “Stand With Minnesota.” Initially a Google Doc, this volunteer-driven mutual aid hub evolved rapidly to provide essential support, such as rent relief and travel arrangements for immigrants affected by the operation. Fairbanks, an Anishinaabe organizer with a strong communications background, utilized her skills and networks to offer a centralized platform for directing aid in real-time.

Reflecting on past donation mismanagement in 2020, Fairbanks was determined to create a more effective distribution system, avoiding lengthy bureaucratic processes, and instead, connecting donors directly with families in crisis. The initiative focuses on immediate needs, like housing, amidst economic disruption caused by the intensified immigration enforcement. Entire immigrant communities face closures of businesses and fear of eviction, making rent relief a critical element of their work.

Fairbanks highlights the reluctance of traditional foundations to fund such direct interventions, advocating for a more dynamic and responsive approach. Stand With Minnesota not only meets urgent needs but also seeks volunteers to sustain its operations. Fairbanks emphasizes the rewarding nature of providing direct support and lights the path for others to establish similar hubs in their communities.
